Calls of Revolution & Art: Self-Portrait of Artistic Practices

While reading Catalogues’ introductions of art exhibitions organized by the Palestinian Plastic Artists’ League in the West Bank and Gaza during the 1970s and 1980s, I noticed that the artists repurposed them as a kind of self-portrait, where they could reflect upon the social and political meanings of their artistic practices. These introductions are similar to art manifestos: they frame the relation of art and artists, on one hand, and social contradictions under the colonial condition, on the other. The texts try to answer questions about art in the time of revolution as well as about revolution in artistic expression. In this article, I examine how Palestinian artists and various art groups conceptualized their artistic practice in dialogue with the anti-colonial struggle.
